Temple History

Planet Moon married the deity of the last star Revathi. They wanted to have the darshan of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvathi. Mother was so merciful and granted darshan to them with the Lord. Lord is called Kailasanathar and Mother Karunakaravalli. Kar in Tamil means rain clouds. They are 7 in numbers. It is said that these clouds worship in the temple on Revathi star days. It is believed that any special puja performed to Varuna the God of Rains on a Sunday combined with Tiruvadhirai star or on Revathi star would bring sufficient rains both for general consumption and for irrigation needs without scarcity. This is a special temple for farmers.

Greatness Of Temple

According to history, the temple was rebuilt by a chieftain named Valvil Ori ruling Kollimalai noted for his charitable character. In the year 1266, the Karnataka king Veera Ramanathan donated adequate lands for the maintenance of Pujas in the temple. Another king Rama Chakravarthi donated more lands to the temple in the year 1541 and 1619. Noted temples of Gunaseelam, Thottiyam, Tiru Engoimalai, Uthamarkoil and Tirunarayanapuram are near this temple. It is believed that Karukudi is next only to Kasi and that Asoka star is circling under the land here.

Lord Shiva and Mother Parvathi had granted darshan to all the 27 star deities in this temple. Yet Star Revathi continued to worship here imagining the great mercy of the divine parents, according to legend. Those belonging to Revathi star are advised to worship in this temple for betterment on their annual star day and offer to Lord and Mother 27 numbers of any auspicious article as 27 Mangal Sutras, 27 blouse bits or 27 food packets and distribute them to the devotees visiting the temple to realize their wishes in life. They are also advised to perform milk abishek to Lord before 12 minutes of the beginning of Aswini star following the end of Revathi star.
