This is the sacred soil that gave birth to Kaduveli Siddhar. Kaduveli means open space. He taught people wisdom he learnt. He performed penance for darshan of Lord Shiva. The Lord appeared before him and gifted skills in Siddhis – an art of 8 branches known as Ashama Siddhis.
The temple was built by a Chola king. Of the elements covering the earth – Akash–space, Vayu–wind, Agni-fire, Appu-water and Prithvi–Earth, this temple is dedicated to Akash, hence the Lord is known as Akashpureeswarar. The king named the place after the Siddha – Kaduveli.
Lord Akashapureeswarar is the authority on Pooradam star. As Mother grants all prosperity and happiness (Mangalam), She is praised as Mangalambikai – Mother of prosperity. It is believed that all the deities in the space and Vasthu Bhagwan worship Lord Akshapureeswarar on Pooradam days. Devotees worship the Lord with all cosmetic substances. The temple did not have the idol of Kaduveli Siddhar earlier.
