The son of a wealthy government official, Michel de Nostradame was born in 1503 in St Remy de Provence, France. Astrology fascinated him but his family considered medicine a more respectable career and so he studied to become a doctor.He set up a practice in Agen, got married and had two children.
Even with his medical prowess, Nostradamus could not save his wife and two children from the clutches of the bubonic plague that haunted their country and they died. Heartbroken, he spent the next ten years, wandering through Europe. During that period, he began to have visions and even made predictions to amuse his friends.
Late at night, he would place himself in a hypnotic trance and stare into a bowl of water to 'see' visions of the future. In 1547, he began to record his visions but fearing persecution, Nostradamus wrote his prophecies in four-line poems called quatrains.He produced ten volumes, containing 1,000 prediction.
