Eligibility

The basic educational qualification required to pursue ones career in this field is a bachelor's degree from a recognized institution. But however to practice as a prosthetist and orthotist one have to register with Rehabilitation Council of the particular country. The eligibility also requires the basic schooling with science discipline.

For a graduation in masters in prosthetics and orthotics the candidate should have a graduate certificate in this program. There are also number of universities and institutes which offer diploma and certificate courses where though they cannot practice as a Prosthetists and Orthotists but can be employed as technicians and can assist them. The entry requirement for diploma and certificate courses however is not much as for graduation.



For most of the courses the age criteria is that the candidate should have completed 17 years of age in the year of admission however it may vary according to reservation stipulations as formulated by the government of the particular country or according to the rules of individual institutions. The program is based on the subjects of both engineering and medical which includes basic life sciences, basic engineering, prosthetics and orthotics workshop technology, orthopaedics, computer studies, physical medicine and rehabilitation, mobility aid, upper and lower limb prosthetics and orthotics, spinal orthotics. There are also extensive clinical practice and lab work so as to make them competent and well qualified in this field.

Excellent interpersonal skills are necessary for this job because it is very much people oriented. The work demands an organized and systematic way of working. The personal qualities needed for this rewarding role are tolerance, patience and compassion, you will also need to be level-headed, practical and have good communication skills.
