Students who want to pursue a career in optometry should have a bachelor's degree in ophthalmic technology. There are number of institutes which also provide diploma courses in optometry. However the eligibility criteria vary with different countries. The optometry course covers a wide variety of subjects, including physical optics, knowledge of optical instruments, general anatomy,

physiology, abnormal and pathological conditions of the eye and the methods to measure refractive errors and their correction. Courses in pharmacology, optics, vision science, biochemistry, and systemic disease are included in the curriculum. There will be practical training in Basic Science, Dispensing Optics and Clinical subjects.

Apart from academic qualifications Patience, manual dexterity, mechanical aptitude, good vision and coordination are essential to become licensed optometrist. Perhaps the most important personal quality required by an optometrist is a liking for people of all ages and a genuine desire to help their patients. Once in practice optometrists also need a willingness to continue learning, not only in clinical knowledge which helps in caring for patients, but also in practice management where business acumen is an asset.
