East Timor was under the Portugal for a long time and they declared independence from Portugal on November 28, 1975.

Thus after a long war East Timor got independence on May 20, 2002.The flag of East Timor is red and rectangular in shape and it represents on the struggle for national liberation.

From the hoist side there comes two isosceles triangles the upper black and the lower yellow one, the bases of which are overlapping. The upper black triangle has a white five pointed star, which signifies the light that guides the country, comes to one-third of the yellow triangle which in turn comes to half the length of the Flag.

There are 2 isosceles triangles the bases of which are overlapping on the extreme left end of the flag. Today, they are still used to welcome home loved ones and denotes active, daring, passionate, and optimistic. It enhances alertness and encourages activity. The black colour of the flag is used to signify that the people are formal, conventional, and dignified. It symbolized power, strength, authority, elegance and death.
