New Year's Day is a special day that is celebrated across the world irrespective of religion, caste, creed and country.

Ancient records indicate that New year was initially celebrated by the Babylonians some 4000 years ago.

But then it was celebrated in the month of March, as it was then considered as the New Year.

Then somewhere around 40 BC Julius Caesar, the Roman emperor changed the New year to January 1st in memory of Janus, the Roman god who had two faces, one representing the previous year and the other the beginning of the New year.

There are various traditions followed around the world to ring in the New year. People exchanges sweets and kisses and hugs on this special day. There would be partying all through the night across clubs and restaurants. People resort to taking new resolutions for the New Year just to get them dropped before January ends!!

The first person to set foot into your house on New year day should be tall, dark and handsome for prosperity and luck all through the year.

It is also advised not to do any washing or cleaning on this day as it would take the fortune off the household.

Make sure you clear all your unpaid bills and debts before the New year day and do not carry it on into the New year.

The New year should be welcomed by loud noises like devotional chanting, lighting fireworks and shooting into the air.
