BASANITE

Overview:

Basanite is an igneous, volcanic (extrusive) rock, of felsic composition, with aphanitic to porphyritic texture. Mineral assembly is usually abundant feldspathoids and plagioclase, and lesser alkali feldspar. Pyroxenes (clinopyroxenes) and olivines are common accessory minerals.

Most basanite is produced in the same manner as basalt. When divergent plate boundaries are pulled apart and erupt on the oceans floor basanite is a by- product of this procedure. Hot basanite that comes into contact with the water quickly cools and it forms into the dark black to dark gray colored rock. With oceanic fissure eruptions which are hotspots, eruptions continually occur and basanite continually piles up from the ruptures with basalt. This process continues until an island is formed. This is how the island state of Hawaii was created.
