There are number of teachers colleges which are operated both by government and private organizations to certify, govern and enforce the standards of practice for the teaching profession. There is a significant difference between primary and secondary teaching where in primary schools each class has a teacher who stays with them for most of the week and will teach them the whole curriculum. In secondary schools they will be taught by different subject specialists each session during the week and may have 10 or more different teachers. There is a system of education USA called as "platoon" system, involves placing a group of students together in one class that moves from one specialist to another for every subject. There is a new trend of co-teaching where the co-teachers work harmoniously with the main teacher to fulfill the needs of every student in the classroom. Co-teaching focuses the student on learning by providing a social networking support that allows them to reach their full cognitive potential.
A teacher is an acknowledged guide or helper in processes of learning. They play a vital role in the overall development of the students. Torben K. Jensen, associate professor and PhD, was presented with Aarhus University’s university pedagogics award (DKK 75,000) in appreciation of his efforts to provide excellent and innovative teaching at Aarhus University.Torben K. Jensen has been the Manager of the Centre for Learning and Education at the Faculty of Social Sciences since the centre opened in 2003. His innovative, excellent work has been absolutely vital in increasing awareness of teaching forms and teaching quality.
At the Faculty of Social Sciences Torben K. Jensen has been the driving force behind the establishment of courses for student instructors, courses for PhD scholars, and courses for experienced teachers. His latest innovation is a brand-new course in supervision for associate professors and professors, something which will undoubtedly help to improve the supervision provided by the faculty at both Master and PhD level.
His efforts mean that Aarhus University as a whole is now much better equipped than ever before to deal with challenges related to teaching and pedagogics. Among other things, he has played a major role in creating the University Pedagogics Development Unit at Aarhus University. He has been chairman of this unit since 2004. At national level he has taught a range of courses for directors of studies and heads of department.
James Brenan joined the U of T community in 1996 as an assistant professor and has since been appointed associate professor with tenure. His field of research is hydrothermal systems. Whether he is teaching large first-year courses or highly specialized graduate courses, Brenan always strives to make learning both a new and student-centered experience. His dedication to teaching extends beyond the classroom. Brenan runs field trips in two of his undergraduate courses and also leads the second-year field course in the department.
A student who participated in one of Brenan's field trips remarks: One realizes how good Professor Brenan's teaching ability is when standing at the side of the Trans-Canada Highway in blowing rain or snow and he is still captivating his audience and inspiring those who are willing to brave the elements with him Brenan instills in students the incentive to be the best. His students describe him as an "exceptional role model" who "leads by example," "a leader in the truest sense of the word" - one who "challenges students and makes them excited to learn."Brenan is also an extraordinary, committed pubic educator, highly active in community outreach on behalf of the geology department. He is a tremendous ambassador to this university.
Stephen Morris joined the physics department as an assistant professor in 1993 and became associate professor with tenure in 1998.Morris teaches throughout the physics curriculum from first year through to the graduate level. This year and last, Morris has been one of the instructors for a first-year course, "Fundamentals of Physics," a challenging course for many students. The department of physics gives Morris and his co-Instructor, Mike Luke, much of the credit for the 21 per cent increased enrollment in second-year chemistry. The increase, they believe, is because both instructors have been so successful in keeping students enthusiastic throughout the course.
In recognition of his teaching in this course, Morris received the 2003 APUS/SAC award for excellence in teaching, an award managed entirely by students. His students describe him as approachable, enthusiastic, humorous, creative, dedicated and innovative in his approach to teaching. Morris brings his research into the classroom and brings the classroom into his laboratory. By organizing tours of his lab, Morris gives his students a unique opportunity to see physics at work in his own research.
Of his performance as a teacher, one student comments: I found Professor Morris to be very conscious of the fact that students were coming from many different backgrounds, and quite good in polling the class to see if students felt confused about something in the lesson that might be presumed knowledge. He seemed genuinely excited about what he was teaching us. I truly appreciated his effort to organize activities outside of class, such as lab tours and movie days. He even prompted us to start a physics club.
