The name Liberia comes from the countries liberty and the flag was adopted on July 26, 1847 after gaining independence.

It was the home for freed US slaves. The flag of Liberia is similar to that of United States of America for the reason it was originally recognized as a colony of the USA.

Many ships from different country has the flag of Liberia because it offers registration under its flag and most of the shipping companies follow this to avoid taxes and restrictions that other countries impose. This is also a source of the countries revenue. The flag of Liberia is designed to have six red and five white alternating horizontal stripes. Towards the hoist side in the upper corner there is a blue canton representing the African mainland with five pointed white single star. The horizontal stripes depict the signatories of the Liberian Declaration of Independence. Courage and moral excellence is symbolized by the red and white colour of the flag and the white star represents the freedom the ex-slaves were given and is also known as the "Lone Star".



The five-pointed star in the western world has strong associations with military power and war thus signifying the military of Liberia. Astrological star is a symbol of light meaning bright future.
