The
Man of Prophecy- Nostradamus
The
son of a wealthy government official, Michel de Nostradame was born in 1503 in
St Remy de Provence, France. Astrology fascinated him but his family considered
medicine a more respectable career and so he studied to become a doctor. He
set up a practice in Agen, got married and had two children. Even
with his medical prowess, Nostradamus could not save his wife and two children
from the clutches of the bubonic plague that haunted their country and they died.
Heartbroken, he spent the next ten years, wandering through Europe. During that
period, he began to have visions and even made predictions to amuse his friends.
Late at night, he
would place himself in a hypnotic trance and stare into a bowl of water to 'see'
visions of the future. In 1547, he began to record his visions but fearing persecution,
Nostradamus wrote his prophecies in four-line poems called quatrains. He
produced ten volumes, containing 1,000 predictions. On
the evening of 1 July, 1556, Nostradamus told his student Chavigny, "Tomorrow
at sunrise, I shall not be here." Sure
enough, the next morning he was found dead at his workbench.

Who's a Prophet anyway A
prophet is a person who, by divine inspiration, declares to the
world the divine will or judgments; a person who foretells the course or nature
of future events.Religious
prophets are men or women divinely chosen to preach the divine message, such as
Jesus and Mohammed. The ancient Hebrews had many prophets; 18 of the 39 books
of the Old Testament of the Bible are ascribed to prophets. In Islam Mohammed was
one of the prophets. Ordinary
people with psychic gifts have also been called prophets. Even
today we have scores of people who claim to posses prophetic skills and wisdom.
The
Bible and Prophecy

The
first written evidence of Prophets and prophecy is found in the Old Testament.
The Prophets were men who saw the future of the Hebrew nation and spoke messages
from God against immorality and wickedness. Christians
believe that a Bible prophecy is a God-given revelation of the future. God gave
His prophets, including Moses, Ezekiel, Isaiah and Jeremiah, prophecies of the
future. He did this to prepare people for the future, and to show that He is the
one true God and that He is all-powerful. A
prophecy is not a prediction of the future - it is a promise about the future.
God gave promises to His prophets. He told that the Jews would be forced out of
Israel, scattered worldwide, persecuted worldwide, and that they would eventually
return to Israel. All of these promises have been fulfilled.
The
Bible contains hundreds of prophecies. Some were fulfilled more than 3000 years
ago. Others have been fulfilled since then. |
