Next Top Model"s Aafreen talks pouts & Dunedin chic

By Chris Whitworth

Aafreen Vaz is the latest casualty on New Zealand’s Next Top Model. The 20-year-old has left the girls’ luxurious Auckland mansion, returning to the cold, spaghetti-on-toast lifestyle of a Dunedin student. The house did, however, have echoes of her student life, with shared cooking and weird food combinations – even if they weren’t always fully appreciated. “I don’t know how to cook so I make up recipes,” she says.

“Scrambled eggs with olives, that went quite well - with me and Lauren at least.” Aafreen may not have left the show with a modeling contract, but she did get a chance to meet one of her style icons - the master of the male pout and Top Model judge Colin Mathura-Jeffree.

“He really knows how to pull off style,” she says. “He can be edgy and flamboyant at the same time.” The former international model even let Aafreen in on the secrets behind his famous pout. She says she can also thank the show for teaching her a few life lessons.

The competing models are only shown footage of their time in the house once they leave. Aafreen says sitting down to watch the show was a weird experience, but it taught her not to doubt herself. “I watched my own elimination - I was crying on TV and in person I was just cracking up,” she says.

“I’m hugely critical of myself and really hard on myself, seeing that on TV I know I’ve got to change that.” Aafreen jokes that although more people know who she is in Dunedin, she hasn’t had an influx of guys’ numbers. “I haven’t had any guys come up to me, that’s probably because I walk around and I look like a guy myself – it’s Dunedin, its cold!”

So it’s back to the books for Aafreen. Her house might be smaller, she may be in the company of whining students, but Aafreen says her plans for the future are still open – modeling will take a backseat for now."If a job comes my way I"ll go for it, but right now I’m just finishing my degree at uni."
