Strolling Stone: Mick"s daughter named Britain"s best model
When her father Mick was her age, he was playing gigs for free during the interval of someone else"s set in a club opposite Ealing Broadway tube station. No such ignominy for 17-year-old daughter Georgia Jagger however, who was last night named Model of the Year at the British Fashion Awards. The "face" of Hudson Jeans, one of the new "faces" of Rimmel, and a new "star" for Versace, she saw off competition from the guitarist Gavin Rossdale"s daughter Daisy Lowe and Rosie Huntingdon-Whiteley, the ex-girlfriend of Ronnie Wood"s son - a crop of rock progeny who have vouchsafed Britain"s cool credentials on catwalks and billboards all over the world.

The best label award was won by Burberry, whose creative director Christopher Bailey announced the label will ontinue to show its designs on the London catwalk next season after a triumphant homecoming earlier this year.

Having previously shown its collections in Milan, the British heritage label returned to the capital as part of celebrations to mark 25 years of London Fashion Week in September, and brought valuable international buyers and style press with it.

Accepting the Designer Brand gong in the British Fashion Awards, Bailey announced that Burberry would continue to show in London next season.

British fashion"s leading lights were rubbing shoulder pads last night at the prestigious annual awards which celebrate home-grown design talent and business success and are voted for by industry leaders, designers and retailers. Bailey also scooped the coveted British Fashion Council"s (BFC) Designer of the Year award.

It was a night of home-comings all round, with John Galliano, the Gibraltarian-British designer who has been at the helm of French house Christian Dior for more than a decade, receiving the Outstanding Achievement in Fashion Design award, and the British-born creative director of American Vogue, Grace Coddington, collecting the Isabella Blow award for Fashion Creator.

The fiery-haired stylist gained wide renown after appearing in The September Issue earlier this year, a fly-on-the-wall documentary set at the magazine"s offices in New York. Having made her name as a model during London"s Sixties heyday, she worked for British Vogue before being lured across the pond to work with fellow ex-pat Anna Wintour.

The face of this year was Georgia Jagger, daughter of Mick, who won in the model category. Others on the shortlist were the guitarist Gavin Rossdale"s daughter Daisy Lowe and Rosie Huntingdon-Whiteley, the ex-girlfriend of Ronnie Wood"s son – a crop of rock progeny who have vouchsafed Britain"s cool credentials on catwalks and billboards all over the world.

In an online public vote, the supermodel Kate Moss was chosen as a figure who embodied the creative spirit of the capital and of the British fashion industry, winning in a newly-created category called London 25.

There were also mentions for those more new to the scene, as 27-year-old Scottish designer Christopher Kane picked up the BFC Collection of the Year award for his sleek velvet and girlish gingham dresses and intricate beadwork, and design duo Peter Pilotto and Christopher de Vos won the Swarovski Emerging Talent Award for their ready-to-wear line. The pair"s digitally distorted graphic prints and futuristic-looking, structured and strong-shouldered dresses are a favourite with the singer Rihanna.

Kim Jones was named Menswear Designer of the Year for his modern approach as Creative Director of the traditional British label Dunhill. Jones, who – like many of the winners – is a graduate of London"s Central St Martin"s, has also worked as a fashion editor and stylist, and designs a line under his own name too. He is part of a new wave of young British menswear designers grabbing attention for an innovative blend of bespoke tailoring and street style, after London Fashion Week added a menswear day to the schedule of shows last February.

And although the era of the It-bag may be over, accessories designers were also honoured, with Holly Fulton winning the Emerging Talent award in that category and Katie Hillier received the Accessories Designer of the Year accolade.
