Barista Emily Stroombergen is willing to cut her long blonde hair to 1 centimetre, if that is what it takes. The 19-year-old from Hataitai says she would do almost anything to win series 2 of New Zealand"s Next Top Model, auditions for which are being held in Wellington on Friday. That included joining in the cattiness between contestants that is common in the television show.

"It brings out the inner bitch in everyone," she laughed. She tried out for series 1 of the show but failed to make it. But as her ambition was to become a model, she intended to overcome nerves to give it another shot this year."I"m quite nervous about it – so many people are going for it."Her modelling career so far had been limited to a few photo shoots for friends."[Becoming a model] is the only thing I have ever really wanted to do," Miss Stroombergen said.

Before the Wellington auditions she already faces a major hurdle, with judge Colin Mathura-Jeffree suggesting a South Island overall winner this season. "Christchurch and Dunedin have really brought the game," he said."Hundreds" of entrants had been turning up to auditions around the country and Mr Mathura-Jeffree said he expected some "wonderful talent" at auditions in Wellington.

His key suggestions to entrants were to come prepared, with not too much makeup, and to wear appropriate clothing that was "natural and very neutral" and did not hide the body."Have an interesting story and a wonderful attitude and be really honest about who you are," he said. Series executive producer John McDonald expected the calibre of models to be high. "We"re still looking for girls with the X factor – unique beauty which sets them apart, and now that they"ve seen from our first series what great experiences they can have, we"re expecting to meet plenty of exciting candidates."

New Zealand"s Next Top Model applicants must be aged between 16 and 25 on July 1 and at least 1.70 metres (5ft 7in) tall. Auditions run from 3pm till 8pm on Friday at the Museum Hotel.
