Eligibility
There are very few institutes which conduct direct courses on tea management but however there are several other allied programs like Agricultural Sciences, Food Science, Horticulture, Botany or related sciences. Tea management covers topics like production, processing, finance, marketing / sales and tea tasting. Though a basic educational qualification is enough to get into this industry generally a degree in Agricultural Science Food Sciences, Horticulture or allied fields is preferred these days. Candidates who have specialized in business management or marketing are recruited for marketing jobs. Tea tasters do not need a high educational qualification.
Most of the jobs in this industry provide on job training including tea tasters. Vigorous training for a number of years is essential before becoming a professional tea taster and then a tea tasting manager. Besides acquiring skills in tasting, they need to work on their managerial and marketing capabilities too. The production of tea at present, cannot meet the high demand for the beverage. As a result there is a continuous growth in the tea industry thus offering lucrative career options to interested individuals. In the plantation field the entrants are appointed as assistants. Then depending upon their work experience they climb the ladder as Assistant Manager, and then Manager of a tea garden.
Apart from the above mentioned requirements leadership qualities and the ability to deal with labourers is an added asset for plantation managers. Knowledge of the tea market, topography and geographical location of the tea estate is required.
