A doctoral degree is the usual educational requirement for the candidate, since most of the work tends to be related to research and development. For entering into this field, one should be good at general physics. To pursue a career in space science one should have studied physics and maths at the pre- university level.

Though there are not any universities/colleges which offers direct course on space research at the graduation level, there are allied programs like astronomy astrophysics etc.Thereafter, take a master's degree in space science or Astronomy. After the successful completion of MSc, one can do specialization in space science leading to Ph. D. which enables one to become a scientist/ research officer etc. in the field of space research.Ph.D is a must for best employment offer.

Another important personality trait required to be an Astronomer is curiosity. One should have the undying zeal to solve mysteries and to find out answers. The aspirant should have good programming skills too and above all, a scientific bent of mind. Space scientists must apply equal measures of analytic thinking and imagination, logic and intuition, to answer the most fundamental questions about the cosmos. They should have above average intelligence, high imagination, persistence, problem-solving and analytical skills and must possess both mathematical and computer skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills are also important because most of them are expected to work as part of a team. They must be capable of explaining scientific phenomena and conveying the information in an easily absorbed format and language.
