An aspirant of mechanical engineering must start his/her academic career in Science at intermediate level. To pursue one's career as a mechanical engineer a graduation or post graduation in this particular discipline is required. Individuals with interests in research and development can take up PhD program after post graduation studies.

There are also numbers of universities which offer diploma courses in mechanical engineering. However the basic eligibility criteria for entry into this course vary with countries. The e course generally offers specialized training in thermal engineering, design, and production engineering.

Mechanical engineering technicians need to have excellent engineering and technical skills. Computer knowledge with analytical skills is also required for designing machines and equipment. They should possess logical mind to make connections between ideas and handle abstract concepts. Creative and innovative ideas to find solutions to problems which may need a new perspective, good practical skills to apply maths and science to real problems.
