Dentistry

Introduction

Dentistry is a branch of medicine where a dentists evaluates, diagnosis, prevent or treat diseases, disorders of the oral cavity, maxillofacial area and related structures and their impact on the human body. Thus dentists diagnose and treat problems with teeth and tissues in the mouth, along with giving advice and administering care to help prevent future problems. They provide instruction on diet, brushing, flossing, the use of fluorides, and other aspects of dental care. Awareness on the importance of oral health has led to the introduction of new fields like cosmetic dentistry; periodontics , oral pathology and orthodontics have all enhanced the scope of this field. Dentistry has started using a variety of techniques and procedures such as computers and magnetic resonance imaging for filling, crowning and scaling of teeth, extracting teeth, treating gum diseases and fitting artificial replacements of the teeth and jaw. Problems dealing with the jaw or any invasive oral procedure are usually undertaken by an oral surgeon.
